New Officers Bring SC Police to Full Staff

The two new police officers sworn in at South Charleston's council meeting Thursday evening bring the city's police force to full staff, with more police officers than the department has had for many years, according to the police chief. The new officers, Joe Williams and Dakota Dennison, bring the total number of officers to 41, said Brad Rinehart, chief of police.

"That brings us to full staff with the most police officers we've ever had, Rinehart said.

Rinehart said the size of the police force will give him more flexibility in making assignments and enhance the capabilities of the police department.

"I can put another guy in the Metro Drug Unit, he said. "I can put another guy in the street crimes unit. Overall, it's going to be good for the public - the citizens of South Charleston. It's one more person out there working.

Rinehart has been chief for eight years. He said 25 of 37 slots were filled when he started.

"Mayor [Frank] Mullens and I had a big job, he said. …
