PREP FOOTBALL - WEEK 1 ; Big Plays Carry Chapmanville Past Sissonville 30-6

Article excerpt

CHAPMANVILLE - It was a game of firsts for Sissonville and Chapmanville.

Not only was Friday the opening night of the season for both teams, but it also marked the first game for new Indians coach Marc Wilson. Meanwhile, it was the first game played with field turf at Tiger Stadium for Chapmanville. Chapmanville spoiled Wilson's debut, using big plays on offense, especially the combo of quarterback Alex Berry to receiver Jacob Dingess, to earn a 30-6 victory over Sissonville on the new turf.

"Growing up here and coaching, this is a dream come true to have a facility that looks so nice, Chapmanville coach George Barker said. "It is amazing. The town and community are so intertwined. It is great to see.

Berry was ecstatic about the new playing surface.

"Getting out here on the turf and to get this win, it was a good feeling, Berry said. "We were very excited. We have been looking forward to it all season, and now we are on it. It's a blast.

Berry thew for 246 yards on 13 of 19 passing, most of which went to Dingess, who caught nine passes for 167 yards, many on big gains.

"If they stay healthy, they are going to be huge, Barker said of his quarterback-receiver tandem. "They are hard to guard. We are what we are. Dingess is hard to guard. We just try to get him in situations where one-on-one we don't think teams can guard him. Alex made a couple strikes and we had some big plays.

Chapmanville used big plays throughout the game to gash the Sissonville defense, including gains of 61 yards on the ground on one play by Ethan Thompson, and several through the air.

Berry completed pass plays of 75, 29, 20 and 20 yards to Dingess, and added a 57-yarder to Dylan Smith. Eight of Berry's 13 passes went for at least 10 yards.

The Tiger senior QB is glad to have such a talent like Dingess on the field. …
