BURY survived a nervy finish to book their place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Hallam Hope broke the deadlock a minute into the second half at Accrington, before Andrew Tutte doubled Bury's lead on 70 minutes.

Stanley substitute Gerardo Bruna gave the hosts hope with seven minutes left, as did the fourth official when he indicated five minutes of stoppage time. And during the added time, Accy won a penalty.

But former Stockport and Stalybridge forward Sean McConville blazed over with the spot-kick, sparing the Shakers from a penalty shoot-out.

While this competition is hardly Bury's top priority this season, the victory is a welcome boost with David Flitcroft's men having yet to win from five games in League One.

Highly-rated youngster Matty Foulds was handed his first senior start in the Bury defence but the Shakers made the early running, with Danny Pugh and Tutte going close.

Piero Mingoia then tested Rob Lainton before the Bury keeper did well to keep out McConville's free-kick. …
