Another '16 Draft Pick Lost in Trade for Kicker

Article excerpt

For the second time this preseason, the Steelers traded away a pick in the 2016 draft to address an area of need on this season's roster.

The Steelers traded a sixth-round pick to Jacksonville Monday for veteran kicker Josh Scobee two days after Garrett Hartley injured a hamstring in a preseason game Saturday against the Buffalo Bills. Hartley was placed on the reserve/injured list.

A month ago, the Steelers traded a conditional fifth-round pick for cornerback Brandon Boykin after it was determined rookie cornerback Senquez Golson could not play this season. Golson was placed on the reserve/injured list Monday as well.

Scobee, 33, was entering the final season of his contract and agreed to restructure his deal with the Steelers, according to a source. He was set to make $3.4 million with Jacksonville, one of the reasons the Jaguars decided on rookie Jason Myers to replace him.

Scobee had been with the Jaguars since 2004. He has made 80.8 percent of his field-goal attempts in his career.

"It's much easier when you're dealing with a veteran, having a guy who's been there before and been in those big games and been very consistent," veteran Steelers long snapper Greg Warren said. "It makes things a lot easier."

It has been a strange preseason for Warren. He snapped for two kickers in his first decade with the team. Now he's breaking in a new teammate for the second time in three weeks. Veteran Shaun Suisham injured his knee in the first preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings and is out for the season.

"It doesn't make it the easiest, that's for sure, but it's part of the game," Warren said. "We deal with it and we move forward. It's good when we can bring in a veteran like Josh and make things a little more seamless."

Scobee was not available for comment. …
