Garfield Moves Ahead with Plan to Build Dog Park

GARFIELD -- The City Council is moving forward with a grant application that could bring a dog park to the city.

Garfield is seeking $300,000 to buy 0.63 acres next to Hobart Place Park, on Hobart Place near Marsellus Place. A playground already exists at the park, and the adjacent land would become two fenced-in dog parks, one for large dogs and one for small dogs, City Manager Tom Duch said at a special council meeting on Tuesday.

"The nice thing about it is people would be able to have their dogs there, and observe their children in the next area which is already fenced in," Duch said.

The cost of clearing out the space and bringing in running water is estimated at $88,000, of which $54,000 would be covered by a grant the city received last year, Duch said.

The land itself was appraised by the city to be worth $315,000 and is owned by the developer Vornado Realty Trust. The city has been in discussion with the company about the possibility that the land could be donated, or sold to the city at a reduced price. …
