STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA

SARASOTA -- Florida's community college system is the fifth-best in the nation, according to a new analysis of data compiled by WalletHub.

But Sarasota and Manatee counties' local college -- the State College of Florida -- was ranked second-worst among the state's community colleges.

SCF ranked 446 out of 670 institutions nationwide on the list, which assessed colleges based on cost, classroom experience, educational outcomes and career outcomes.

Those results contradict SCF's spot in Florida's performance- based funding rankings, which saw the school ranked sixth out of 28 community colleges statewide. The Division of Florida Colleges named it and seven other state colleges "gold-standard schools."

Brian Thomas, special assistant to the president at SCF, said much of WalletHub's findings contradict those calculated by the state, which uses performance-based funding to reward high- performing schools with extra funding and threatens to take base funding away from schools rated poorly. …
