THE POP-UP ART STORE ; the Buy Art Fair Is Back at Old Granada Studios Next Week - Giving Artists the Chance to Connect Directly with Buyers

Article excerpt

AKIND of pop-up art department store, Buy Art Fair is an annual celebration of contemporary art that brings together hundreds of exciting working artists and the galleries that represent them into one place.

This year, again, the fair returns to Old Granada Studios where it enjoyed unprecedented success in its six-year history and where around 50 galleries will present the work of hundreds of artists throughout the weekend.

Sister event The Manchester Contemporary - designed to showcase work by experimental artists and introduce emerging names to art collectors - is also back with a record number of returning and new exhibitors.

Since launching in 2008, says fair director Sophie Helm, the entire culture of buying art has changed: "The art marketplace, where art is bought and sold, has changed considerably," she explains, "and in some ways this is driven by the internet, so the maker can now reach the buyer direct."

Among this year's visitors to the Buy Art Fair are: Cloud Gallery, Alice Harfield, Generation Gallery, MASA-UK Gallery, Salvage Gallery, Jo Bennett Original Pictures, ArtGallery.co.uk, A Heart of Glass, Eye Kandi Art, ArtDog London, Manchester Craft and Design Centre, Liverpool Biennial, The Hepworth Wakefield, Sarah Samuels Fine Paintings Chester, GOSH Gallery, and Future Artists.

Some of those headed to The Manchester Contemporary are: BREESE LITTLE, Bureau, PAPER, The International 3, Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, Castlefield Gallery, Vane, Cactus Gallery, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, Islington Mill, and WORKS|PROJECTS.

Given the scale of the show, the appeal for an art-hungry audience seems obvious - but what is the draw for the artists? For Yorkshire-born and Lincoln-based artist Katy Jade Dobson - represented by Cloud Gallery and returning following considerable success last year - it's just the perfect forum to talk to people about practice, paintings, and picking up commissions. …
