MARSHALL FOOTBALL ; His Rare Day in the Sun; Long-Snapper Cincotta One of Few Bright Spots for Herd vs. OU

Article excerpt

HUNTINGTON - The first men downfield on the punt coverage team should be the "bullets," those lined up on each end. Those are often the fleetest on the team, either defensive backs or wide receivers. But for the last three-plus seasons, Marshall has had the man jokingly called the "third bullet, long-snapper Matt Cincotta. But don't laugh too much - the 6-foot-1, 210-pound native of Charlotte, North Carolina, has 10 career tackles. And, now, a fumble recovery.

No joke, no fluke. Last weekend, he snapped to fourth-year punter Tyler Williams and booked it downfield to cover the return of a 46- yard punt. Ohio's Papi White muffed the kick and Cincotta slid in head-first to cover the ball.

Counting the nine punts Williams was required to make at Ohio, plus a field goal and an extra-point attempt, the Herd has attempted 56 field goals, 228 extra-point and 161 punts during Cincotta's career.

Most have been to Tyler Williams, who has been punter and holder almost exclusively through the three-plus seasons. …
