Fernando Desperate to Prove Doubters Wrong

FERNANDO is back to full fitness and keen to make amends for a disappointing season in 2014/15.

Yet to play this term, he was a substitute for City in Tuesday's Champions League defeat to Juventus and is desperate to bounce back.

"Now, I am 100 per cent well," he said. "I stopped for a while because I really needed to recover and that helped me a lot and now I just need to get back on track.

"As soon as the manager wishes to have me back, I'm carrying on doing my job, I feel I am prepared for that, so whenever he wants me on the pitch I will be there."

Fernando acknowledges he did not live up to expectations last season.

"I need to take a lesson from the first season in order to actually move into the this season the best way possible," he said.

James Milner and Frank Lampard might have left but Fabian Delph and exciting teenager Patrick Roberts have intensified the competition in midfield, along with Fernandinho's resurgence and the knock-on effect of accommodating new boys Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne.

"Of course, it's always good for us when there's this kind of challenging within the team," he added. "I've always been in teams where competition is part of our daily basis and I think it's really good not only for the team, but also as a player.

"All I can say is I will carry on working as hard as I can to be used for the games.

"Some seasons we play better than other seasons. Fernandinho started really well this season, he scored two goals so far but he's a great player and he's actually showing who he is."

Fernando emerged as City's scapegoat last season in Manuel Pellegrini's demanding 4-4-2 set-up.

The Pounds 12m signing cannot understand the obsessing over formations and is at his most thoughtful when discussing City's support.

"It's not relevant," he said. "Whatever the manager decides is best for the team, we just do our job in the midfield as we have been asked to. …
