Reynolds Kicks Patriots to Overtime Victory

BESSEMER | Life rarely provides a second chance. Hillcrest- Tuscaloosa kicker Dean Reynolds actually made good on his fourth chance, nailing the winning kick on a 26-yard field goal to lift the Patriots to a 23-20 overtime win over Bessemer City.

The visitors had tied the game on a 1-yard dive by quarterback Cole Frederick with 1:14 on the clock. Only a point-after kick by Reynolds stood between the Patriots and a nearly-certain victory.

An offsides call on the Purple Tigers squelched the first try before it was attempted. The second went through, but a Hillcrest miscue forced the senior to make one more try, which bounded off the right upright and back onto the field.

"My heart stopped," Reynolds said. "I felt like I let my team down a little bit, but my team had my back. They encouraged me. They said when it came down to it, it was going in the next time."

The Patriots' defense stymied the home team's final grasp at victory in regulation and held Bessemer City scoreless on four downs in overtime. …
