Article excerpt

BALDWIN CITY -- In a battle of clashing offensive styles, the Baker Wildcats won a Top-20 NAIA showdown against the William Penn Statesmen 48-13 Saturday at Liston Stadium.

The No. 15 Wildcats scored on the opening drive as quarterback Nick Marra led a no-back spread offense 63 yards by completing three passes to receiver Ladai Shawn Boose. The final connection between the two was an 8-yard touchdown that capped the 10-play drive.

"We haven't showed that five-wides package very much," Marra said. "We came out no-huddle with five wides right away and got after them. We have receivers that if we get the ball to them in space -- they will make plays."

Marra finished with 392 yards passing, five touchdowns and a passer rating of 128.9. With the win, Baker improves to 3-0 in the Heart of America Athletics Conference.

William Penn went three-and-out on its second possession and then turned it over for a second time as Statesman quarterback Tyler Hafner was picked off by Akim Francis.

Baker would cash in both times, getting a 16-yard rushing touchdown from Adonis Powell and a 9-yard touchdown reception by Alex Stebbins. Clarence Clark would finish off the first-half scoring for the Wildcats with a 60-yard touchdown reception and 28 and 22 yard field goals.

Baker's defense limited the Statesman to 197 yards rushing on 59 attempts. They entered the game averaging 349 yards on the ground.

Eleven different Wildcats caught passes. Clark led the air attack with 169 yards on nine receptions and two touchdowns. Boose added 47 yards on nine catches and Damon Nolan caught four balls for 75 yards.

"I don't have to worry about who I am throwing to," Marra said. "I just follow my reads and know that whoever I throw the ball to they can go for six at any time. …
