CHRISTIAN'S SPORTS BEAT ; New Team, New Challenges

After a stellar soccer career at Winfield High School, a freshman on the Marshall University Thundering Herd women's soccer team has started where she left off with the Generals. Jayne Lawman, a two- time Gatorade West Virginia Girls Soccer Player of the Year, is now starting for the Thundering Herd.

I recently got a chance to talk to Lawman after Marshall beat Eastern Kentucky University 51 at the university's Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex. The 19-year old gave me her thoughts about playing for Marshall: "It's really exciting and cool, especially since it is near my community, so I have a chance to support my state and give back to them for what they have given to me in the past years.

Lawman has started most of the games so far this season at forward for the Herd.

During her high school career, Winfield won three straight Class AAA state championships in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. I wanted to know the transition has been like for her from high school to now college soccer.

"It has been challenging, she said, "but I think I have adjusted pretty well. It's nice to have friends around you going through the same thing, so it hasn't been too hard.

Lawman also was named the 2014 West Virginia High School Soccer Coaches Association Class AAA Forward of the Year.

While Lawman has started playing soccer for Marshall, her younger sister, Mary, is a standout junior at Winfield this season. Lawman explained to me the importance of having a soccer knowledgeable family nearby. "It's awesome. I always get to see them and they are always here to watch my games and that makes it a lot of fun. The support they give me is really important to me.

Lawman scored 101 goals during her high school career. After topping the century mark for goals in high school, she scored her first collegiate goal against Indiana State in the season's fourth game. …
