PREP VOLLEYBALL ; George Washington Remains Unbeaten with Wins at Showcase

Article excerpt

The Volleyball Showcase at the Charleston Civic Center concluded with a bang Thursday evening, featuring some of the Kanawha Valley's best teams - George Washington, Winfield and Herbert Hoover. The Patriots are not only one of the top teams in the Valley but also entire state, as evidenced by their undefeated record so far this season.

GW easily disposed of Parkersburg Catholic 25-8 and 25-9 and followed it up with a 25-16, 25-16 victory over South Charleston to improve to 20-0.

Patriot coach Missy Smith is proud of her team's unblemished record but knows the end of the season is what is most important in hopefully a return to the state tournament, also scheduled for the Civic Center.

GW lost to Martinsburg in heartbreaking fashion in the Class AAA state semifinals last season. The Patriots led 2-0 in the best-of- five format before falling.

"Granted, it's always a goal but you don't know what everyone else has, Smith said. "We just try and play well on our side, and so far we have been successful. It's good to see the girls rewarded with all their hard work and to see them play that well on the court.

"They want to be challenged. They want to be pushed and they understand what they are up against, and they want to win. I'm blessed with a great, hard-working group.

GW sophomore Tessa Wyner, a first-team all-state selection as a freshman, indicated the tough loss in the semifinal of the state tournament has pushed the Patriots all year.

"Last year it was great motivation to work even harder and do better. It was a really difficult loss, she said. "You put all that work into it and then you lose in the fifth set.

* Another team producing solid results is Winfield, which won a recent nine-team tournament in Buffalo.

Winfield has only lost three matches all season, once to Herbert Hoover and twice to undefeated GW. The last defeat to the Patriots, though, was in the semifinals of the Cabell Midland Tournament by a close margin of 22-25, 23-25. …
