Mustangs Kicking in Just His Third Season, Matt Morgan Has Plum off to Its Best Start since 2001

From the moment the Plum athletic department plucked Matt Morgan from Gateway three years ago, the tide has been trending up for the Mustangs football team.

Although it didn't happen instantly, Morgan is starting to witness the same success he did while with the Gateway program.

"It is a lot of hard work and dedication," Morgan said. "I had a program at Gateway we ran. We had a recipe of success there. It is a combination of the offseason, good coaches and our mindset."

In his first season as the Mustangs head coach, Morgan stumbled to a 1-9 record, but the turnaround started in week 9 of that 2013 campaign with a 30-22 win at Greensburg Salem.

Morgan continued to turn the corner last season, leading the Mustangs to a 6-5 record including a win in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs against rival Penn Hills, 17-6.

"Last year we built off of the season before and we are doing the same thing this year," Morgan said. "We had extremely high expectations for the guys this season. The guys who came back have contributed real well for us. The kids still have to perform better by my standards right now. We still have to reach our expectations.

"Winning against Penn Hills in the playoffs last year was a huge win for us. I expect a lot more than one win in the playoffs, though. We are 3-0 but we could be executing a lot better still. We still need to put it together."

Not that it means much to Morgan, but the Mustangs are 3-0 for the first time since 2001 when they opened the season 5-0. In Morgan's mind, the team is 0-0 heading into every week.

"I don't pay attention to the past or history," Morgan said. "We won our first third and now we go to our next third of the season. Our record means nothing to me right now. We are 0-0 every game to me and that is our approach every week."

A big part to the Mustangs success is their stingy defense, especially the past two weeks on the road at North Hills and Altoona. …
