Article excerpt

CHICAGO * The Chicago Blackhawks scored two goals in the final 4 minutes, 18 seconds of regulation to beat the Blues 3-1 in a preseason game at the United Center Saturday night.

Patrick Kane's breakaway goal snapped a 1-1 tie and Duncan Keith's power-play slap shot with 2:02 left gave the Blackhawks a cushion.

Afterward, the Blues and Blackhawks played a mandatory 3-on-3 overtime period, and exactly one minute in, Troy Brouwer scored for the Blues.

The Blues fell to 2-2 in exhibition play, which resumes Tuesday in Dallas.

The Blues' goal Saturday belonged to defenseman Joel Edmundson.

Edmundson, a second-round pick in 2011, continues to be impressive in camp. He's physical, can move the puck and can help on special teams.

Edmundson's goal came on a first-period power play, giving the Blues a 1-0 lead with 1:05 left in the frame.

The Blues assigned 14 players to their American Hockey League affiliate and released five players from their professional tryouts Saturday.

The players assigned to the AHL's Chicago Wolves were Cody Beach, Pat Cannone, Jaedon Descheneau, Jacob Doty, Justin Hodgman, Danny Kristo, Zach Pochiro, Ryan Tesink, Yannick Veilleux, Konrad Abeltshauser, Jordan Schmaltz, Tommy Vannelli, Jordan Binnington and Niklas Lundstrom. …
