ILLEGAL WORKERS ARRESTED DURING CITY RAIDS ; Swoop Is Part of Two-Week Crackdown.

IMMIGRATION officers swooped on companies, restaurants and fast- food takeaways across Greater Manchester to make 24 arrests during a two-week crackdown on illegal working.

The arrests were made during coordinated raids by Home Office immigration enforcement officers. A total of 14 businesses were warned they would be liable to pay fines of up to Pounds 20,000 for each illegal worker found, unless evidence could be provided that correct pre-employment checks were carried out.

The action coincides with the government's announcement of the Immigration Bill. Raids were carried out from September 8 to 18.

. At Apex Technology in Salford, a 25-year-old Afghan man was arrested as he had no permission to work in the UK.

.. At Irlam Pound Plus on Liverpool Road, Salford, two Pakistani men were arrested - a 25-yearold for obtaining leave to remain by deception and a 29-year-old for overstaying his visa.

.. A 25-year-old Pakistani man was arrested at Indian Tiffin on Chapel Street, Cheadle, for overstaying his visa.

.. At Liptes fast food delivery services on Bolton Road, Swinton, a 40-year-old Pakistani man was arrested as he had no permission to work in the UK.-Three men were held at Jaipur Palace on Wilmslow Road, Manchester.

A 45-year-old Indian man was arrested for working in breach of his visa conditions, a 61-year-old Pakistani man for entering the UK without leave to do so and a 27-year-old Pakistani man for overstaying his visa.

.. At Coriander restaurant on Walmer Street, Manchester, a 53- year-old Indian man was arrested for overstaying his visa.

.. At Bitz and Pizza on Bridge Street, Heywood, near Rochdale, a 47-yearold Pakistani man was arrested for overstaying his visa.

.. In Wigan a 40-yearold Chinese woman was arrested for overstaying her visa and a 49-year-old Chinese man was held for entering the UK without leave to do so. …
