Man Gets 5-10 Years for Machete Attack

A Northview Heights man who attacked another man with a machete last year on a Downtown street will serve five to 10 years in prison.

Jason Butler, 27, appeared Monday before Common Pleas Judge Jill E. Rangos and pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for the Dec. 8 attack on Fredrick Pryor III . The prison term was part of a negotiated plea agreement.

That morning, Butler argued with Mr. Pryor over an earlier small claims court incident involving Mr. Pryor's girlfriend, said assistant district attorney Matthew Robinowitz. After the argument about 11:50 a.m. that day, Butler went to an army surplus store on Liberty Avenue and bought a machete. He returned to the bus stop near the Wood Street T Station, where Mr. Pryor was still waiting and attacked him, Mr. Robinowitz said.

Mr. Pryor suffered injuries to his left wrist and hand but was able to stop the attack, the prosecutor said. Butler was arrested a short time later.
