Saddle River Family Gives Univ. of Chicago $100M

A family from Saddle River has donated $100 million to the University of Chicago to establish the first research institute and annual global forum of its kind devoted solely to the study and resolution of global conflicts, the school announced Wednesday.

The $100 million gift was made at the direction of Thomas L. Pearson and Timothy R. Pearson, chairman and president and CEO, respectively, of The Pearson Family Foundation. It is the second- largest gift in the university's history and ranks among the largest academic donations nationwide.

The Pearsons are business entrepreneurs, investors and philanthropists with a long-standing interest in the resolution of global disputes and conflicts, according to the school.

In a phone interview, Timothy Pearson said the family "came to believe global conflicts are the most significant public policy issue of our lifetime."

Thomas Pearson said in a release issued by the school that the gift "signifies our belief that non-state conflicts, from drug cartels to insurgent organizations such as ISIS, increasingly constitute the foreign policy challenge of our time."

Timothy Pearson has lived in Saddle River since 1998 and is retired from KPMG in Montvale, where he was a managing partner and vice chairman. He said the family considered a dozen universities before making the gift to the University of Chicago. …
