A 'real possibility' that Bills' McCoy won't play

A hamstring injury that has been nagging Bills running back LeSean McCoy since he suffered it on Aug. 18 could sideline him for the team's game Sunday, against the Giants. Bills coach Rex Ryan said there's a "real possibility" that McCoy won't play, acknowledging it "doesn't look good," which would put Karlos Williams in the starting role.

Though McCoy has played in the club's first three games, he hasn't been the dynamic playmaker the Bills were relying on when they acquired him in an offseason trade with Philadelphia. His injury has led to Williams, a rookie fifth-round draft pick, leading the team in rushing (186 yards).

The Bills might be down another offensive starter receiver Sammy Watkins suffered a calf injury last weekend and was held out of practice Wednesday. He noted he doesn't want to rush back too early after spending much of last season playing through a series of injuries.

Cruz ailing again * Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Victor Cruz was unable to practice Wednesday after feeling discomfort in his calf. The wide receiver participated in some individual drills, but stopped before the team phase of practice and he might be out several more weeks. Cruz has not played since suffering a knee injury last October. Then he pulled a calf muscle in mid-August and has not practiced since.

Former Ram on the move * The Patriots traded tight end Michael Hoomanawanui to the Saints for defensive tackle Akiem Hicks. Hoomanawanui (Illinois), who played for the Rams in 2010 and '11, started 12 games for New England last season, making three catches. He's played in two games as a reserve this year without a catch. Hicks has been a starter since 2013 but his playing time has been reduced recently. Also, the Patriots released linebacker Dekoda Watson. …
