Central Catholic Hoping to Build off Early Success

Article excerpt

Central Catholic was hoping for a positive barometer to the upcoming season when it competed in the St. Margaret Fall Face-Off.

Though the Vikings didn't get the result they wanted - they lost in the championship game and had to settle for second to Pine- Richland - the way they made it through the tournament gave them an optimistic view heading into their season opener Tuesday at Seneca Valley.

"I guess we didn't finish how we wanted, but we made our way to the championship game," Central Catholic coach Bill Connelly said. "We're proud of that and we're going to take some positives out of the tournament."

If the tournament was any indication, though, Central Catholic will be one of the higher scoring teams in Class AAA and might make some noise as the season progresses. The Vikings went 4-1 in their five games and finished with a whopping 36 goals and had three players, Ryan Haag, Ryan Kingerski and Antonio Misiti, finish 1-2- 3 in the tournament in scoring.

Haag led all scorers with 10 goals - two more than teammate Sam DiLucia - while Misiti led everyone with nine assists. How playing competitively and an early season tournament translates to regular- season success is one of the big questions facing the Vikings this year.

"I think the big thing for us is that the team is growing up a little bit, and I don't mean just physically," Connelly said. "They're starting to grow together and the big thing for us is the development and growth of our team getting a little bit more mature. I think that's going to be a big thing for us as we rely on some of those players who are now upperclassmen as we rely on their leadership and their skill set."

It helps that Central Catholic returns two junior all-star forwards in Kingerski and Jake Tepe, who were the team's two top scorers a year ago and both are beginning to come into their own. …
