Ineffective Pineda Pulled Early by Girardi

BALTIMORE -- With home-field advantage in the wild card at stake heading into his start, Michael Pineda lasted just 3 2/3 innings -- removed after 83 pitches in Sunday's regular-season finale at Camden Yards. "Right now, I don't feel pretty good," Pineda said of his performance in Baltimore's 9-4 win.

The Yanks will host Tuesday's wild card against Houston due to the Astros' loss Sunday at Arizona, but that was an uncertainty when Pineda exited with a man on and the Yanks trailing, 3-1.

Chris Capuano relieved and yielded an odd double by Ryan Flaherty that deflected off the lefty's leg and past second baseman Dustin Ackley. Two batters later, Gerardo Parra's two-run single made it 5- 1 and manager Joe Girardi would call on seven more relievers.

"I didn't think he threw horrible," Girardi said of Pineda. "The thing was, he'd thrown so many pitches. "If we're going to do anything in this [postseason], he has to be good and I don't want to wear him down. That's why I took him out. …
