- THE Voice star Lucy O'Byrne will play the lead role of Maria von Trapp in this year's Christmas production at The Lowry.

The Dublin-born classically trained soprano raised the roof on the BBC One singing talent contest earlier this year and now she is heading to Salford to play the iconic role made famous on the silver screen by the legendary Julie Andrews.

Lucy, who was mentored by will.i.am on The Voice, will join the company of this new Bill Kenwright production of The Sound of Music as Maria this Christmas.

Lucy, who recently performed on the BBC Proms, made history as the first classical singer to reach the final of The Voice.

She said; "I can't wait to be in Manchester for Christmas. I spent some time here when I was working on The Voice at the BBC and it's a great city. I will definitely be trying to squeeze in a visit to the Christmas Markets" Produced by Bill Kenwright, the show will run from Monday December 14 to Saturday January 2 and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the film version. …
