ST. LOUIS > Driver is shot in car * Calmise Hall, 42, died at a hospital after being shot several times from a car that pulled alongside his about 9 a.m. Wednesday on South Jefferson Avenue near Russell Boulevard. A female passenger in his black sedan escaped injury. The driver's door had more than a dozen bullet holes.

Police Capt. Mary Warnecke said investigators were unsure about a motive. Hall, who lived about a half mile away, in the 3700 block of Accomac Street, had served prison time in the 1990s for second- degree murder. He was 17 when he was charged with killing Michael Slaughter, 22, at the Cochran housing complex in July 1990. Hall was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Wednesday's shooting happened about two houses away from the Bright Beginnings day-care center, 2027 South Jefferson. Kristal Gomiller, a supervisor there, said 14 children were inside and that they lay on the floor after shots rang out.

WELLSTON > Gambling debt led to killing * A University City teen gunned down a Pine Lawn teen over the weekend after an argument over a dice game debt, police said.

Jermaine McDaniels, 18, of the 6900 block of Roberts Avenue, was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Police say he shot and killed Melvin Pogue, 19, of the 2500 block of Crescent Avenue, about 7:20 p.m. Saturday. Pogue was found in the 6400 block of Myrtle Avenue in Wellston.

Pogue was a 2015 graduate of Normandy High School and earlier Saturday he had attended homecoming activities at the school. Police don't think that had a connection to the homicide, said North County Police Cooperative Chief Tim Swope. Swope called in the Major Case Squad ofGreater St. Louis to handle the killing.

McDaniels was being held in lieu of $250,000 cash-only bail.

ST. LOUIS > Stolen car fatality identified * Police said a youth killed while riding in a stolen car that crashed Monday night was Tyrese Brown, 15, of the 700 block of O'Fallon Street. The driver and another passenger, both also 15, survived. The driver was reported to be in stable condition and the passenger in critical and unstable condition.

Officials said the car was heading north on Ohio Avenue about 10:10 p.m. when it collided with a car going west on Winnebago Street, then struck a fire hydrant and a building. The other driver, a woman, 33, suffered bruises. The car used by the teens had been taken in a carjacking in the 3100 block of Wyoming Street about three and a half hours earlier.

WELLSTON > Man killed in hit-and-run * James R. Tilford, 48, of Wellston, was fatally injured by a hit-and-run car after walking into its path Monday night at Page and R.M. Moore avenues, the Missouri Highway Patrol said. Officials have no description of the vehicle, which apparently was traveling west on Page. …
