Garrett Asks Feds for Rail Inspection Documents

Concerned about the number of trains carrying volatile crude oil through his district, U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett called on federal officials Thursday to obtain private inspection reports from rail companies on all spans through the region and share them with local officials.

Railroads are required to give their inspection reports to the Federal Railroad Administration only if the agency requests them. Otherwise the reports remain private and are not subject to any regulatory review.

"We have a right to know if the rail infrastructure in our communities meets or exceeds safety standards and, if it does not, what action is being taken to address any deficiencies," Garrett, a Republican from Wantage, wrote in a letter sent to the railroad agency Thursday.

Garrett's request was prompted in part by the derailment this week of a CSX train on a track in Englewood that does not carry oil trains. No one was injured and the three derailed tanker cars did not leak the cooking oil they carried. …
