Teen Gets National Attention | Clark Dean, of Sarasota Crew, Is Up for USRowing Junior Athlete of the Year

SARASOTA -- A local rower is in the running for USRowing's Junior Athlete of the Year awards.

Clark Dean, a 15-year-old Pine View School student who trains with the Sarasota Crew rowing club, is one of five rowers from across the country nominated in the juniors category for the "fan's choice" awards, in which the public votes for the most deserving athlete.

Dean started rowing with crew as a sixth-grader, and said he immediately took to the sport.

"I loved being on the water," Dean said. "And the idea that the harder I worked, the faster I would go. And just being around all of my friends."

This past season, he was the only freshman in the

boy's eight boat -- in which Crew usually puts their strongest and fastest athletes -- that took No. 7 in the country at the USRowing Youth National Championships. He'd go on to place first in the Under-17 division in the single at USRowing Club Nationals and the Royal Canadian Henley in Ontario, Canada. …
