Four Firms in Bid to Run Metrolink ; Transport Bosses Produce Shortlist of Hopefuls as Renewal Date for 10-Year Tram Service Deal Approaches

TRANSPORT bosses have shortlisted four companies to operate and maintain Manchester's Metrolink network when the current deal runs out in just over a year's time.

The current contract, between Transport for Greater Manchester and RATP Dev, ends in January 2017.

Four companies - KeolisAmey, National Express, Transdev and RATP Dev - have qualified to bid for the 10-year contract.The opportunity was advertised earlier this year and the firms were questioned by TfGM bosses in July. The tender stage of the process is now due to start.

The new contract will begin in Metrolink's silver jubilee year and will see the completion of the Second City Crossing - the final piece of a expansion that has trebled the size of the original tram network.

Subject to the outcome of a public inquiry, work could also be well underway to further extend the network to Trafford Park.

The successful bidder expect to benefit from the expanded network - and command a large, modern fleet of trams that offer free Wi-Fi to passengers. …
