London Is Jets' Calling

Article excerpt

FLORHAM PARK - Ryan Fitzpatrick enjoys the traditional 1 p.m. Sunday NFL starting times, especially when it's a home game.

"I love the 1 o'clock game and getting home and eating food from the crock pot and doing all that," Fitzpatrick said Monday when asked about the Jets' upcoming visit to London to play Miami on Sunday.

Well, how about some fish and chips after this game, Ryan?

The veteran quarterback has a point, in that this contest will be far outside the norm for the Jets, who haven't played a regular- season game overseas. Miami, in contrast, has numerous players who were on the roster last year when the Dolphins routed Oakland at Wembley Stadium, also the site of Sunday's game.

Still, despite the fact that he would prefer a more routine Sunday, Fitzpatrick has no problem with taking a trip to England.

"I think it's exciting," he said. "I think guys think it's cool to go over there. It will be a unique experience for all of us and hopefully bring the team together even more.

"Just getting our bodies acclimated and everything with the time change will be interesting," Fitzpatrick added.

London is five hours ahead of Eastern Daylight time, so the game will begin at 2:30 p.m. local time, 9:30 a.m. here. The Jets will practice Wednesday and Thursday, and then fly from Newark to London after Thursday's practice.

The Jets will practice in England on Friday and then have a walkthrough, as usual, the day before. The team brought in a sleep specialist to counsel the players on how best to prepare themselves for the approximately seven-hour flight overseas and the time change.

"It's different going over to London," Bowles said. "It's not like going to [a normal] away game, because the time change is such a difference for you. ... No matter how you prepare for them, the sleeping and the sleep you get and the time you play is going to be a little different. …
