It was a clean sweep for George Washington High soccer as both the girls and boys teams earned Class AAA Region 1 titles Thursday evening at Trace Fork. The Patriots girls team opened the evening with a 6-2 win over Capital. The win sends GW (16-4-2) to regional play, where it will face Greenbrier East at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Greenbrier East. Capital's season ended at 7-12-3.

The evening's second contest saw the Patriots boys team avenge a regular-season loss to Ripley with a 2-0 win. GW (16-2-4) will travel to play the Region 3, Section 2 winner at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Greenbrier East. Ripley's season came to an end at 15-6-1.

Darian Ball and Emily Lewis had single goals for GW, while Jessica Lowen, Kayse Ellis and Brooklyn Nunley had assists.

Capital got on the board with 2:37 to play when Akeira Jackson netted a goal with an assist from Ally Reeves. Reeves added an unassisted goal 30 seconds later to close out the scoring.

"The first time we played them we didn't compete at all with them, said Capital coach Susie Garrison. …
