Walter R. "Bob" Stillman, who was the third-generation owner of a venerable Englewood-based Buick dealership, Stillman & Hoag Inc., died Saturday at his home in Peabody, Mass. He was 81 and formerly of Haworth.

The cause was pancreatic cancer, said his son John.

Mr. Stillman, a native of Tenafly, was president of Stillman & Hoag from the mid-1960s until 1999, when he and John, the fourth- generation owner, sold the dealership to General Motors.

The business was founded in 1908 by Mr. Stillman's grandfather and was overseen for decades by his father. Both grandfather and father were named Walter; Mr. Stillman's father is enshrined in the Automotive Hall of Fame.

Under Mr. Stillman, the business expanded to 11 franchises, including Chevrolet, Pontiac and Oldsmobile, in Englewood and Middletown, N.Y. At the time of its acquisition by GM, Stillman & Hoag was believed to be New Jersey's oldest family owned car dealership.

John Stillman recalled that he entered the business when his father handed him a soapy bucket and pointed him to the used-car lot. …
