Just as Focus on Renewal held a gala to commemorate 46 years of providing social services for the Sto-Rox community, Cynthia L. Haines took the helm of the organization as it's new executive director.

Ms. Haines started Oct. 1, and the fund-raising gala was Oct. 3. She will lead a staff of 30 full-time and part-time employees.

She replaces Greg Quinlan, who moved to Harrisburg with his family because his wife got a job there.

"I'm elated about the opportunity to work with an innovative community provider organization," Ms. Haines said. "I'm looking forward to maximizing public-private partnerships to forge community alliances, coalitions and collaborations."

The nonprofit organization serves McKees Rocks, Stowe and surrounding communities with an array of services, including a community center, food pantry, free daily lunches for the needy, workforce readiness assistance, Head Start and other family supports programs, the FOR Sto-Rox Library and the Father Ryan Arts Center.

For more than 20 years Ms. Haines has worked for both for-profit and nonprofit organizations, including Abraxas, Pittsburgh New Futures, A Bridge to Independence in Braddock and 16 years with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

At Focus on Renewal, she said she hopes to help "the most vulnerable and at-risk in the Sto-Rox community and surrounding areas. …
