Janet Jackson's Comeback Proves She's 'Unbreakable'

These days, fans of Janet Jackson are seeing an all-new and dare we say family-friendly side of the superstar.

Once known for midriff-baring costumes, a topless Rolling Stone cover and onstage lap dances for male concertgoers, Jackson has cleaned up her act for "Unbreakable," which debuted Oct. 2. It's her seventh chart-topping album; only Madonna and Barbra Streisand have more.

The "Rhythm Nation" singer, up for possible induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is on the road with the "Unbreakable" tour, which comes to Chaifetz Arena on Thursday. It's part of her extensive comeback plan, which includes a rebranding that's reminiscent of her earlier days.

In the time of "Control" (1986) and "Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814" (1989), she came off as sweetly modest everyone's favorite little sister. But in her sexy "Love Will Never Do Without You" video in 1989, she unveiled herself, both literally and figuratively.

That liberation played out for years in her lyrics, videos and more, culminating in 2004 with her breast-baring wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl.

All that she'd built was suddenly torn down. She saw herself catching zero breaks after that in what looked like a blacklisting.

No longer was Jackson a radio staple. Some reasoned that was just nature taking its course as it has with other aging divas such as Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez and Madonna. But it happening so close to the Super Bowl controversy was telling.

Jackson's album sales also plummeted, though "20 Y.O" (2006) and "Discipline" (2008) weren't peak Jackson quality, anyway.

After "Discipline" ran its course, Jackson mostly stayed out of the music scene, instead working on her movie career with "Why Did I Get Married Too?" and "For Colored Girls," though she did hit the road in 2011 for a scaled-down greatest-hits tour.

After marrying wealthy businessman Wissam Al Mana in 2012, Jackson vanished. …
