TODAY the Manchester Evening News calls on the city's underworld to hand over the evil gunman who brazenly shot a seven-year-old boy on the doorstep of his home.

The boy came to the door with his mother Jayne Hickey to be confronted by two men.

One asked 'where's your husband' before the other shot Mrs Hickey, 29, twice above the knee and then delberately turned the gun on her seven-year-old son blasting him once in the thigh.

The pair were targeted in the doorway of their home in Gillingham Road, Winton, Eccles, and detectives said the pair sustained serious injuries. Yesterday the boy underwent surgery on life-changing injuries and he is expected to remain in hospital for weeks.

Mrs Hickey, a product manager for HSBC, also remains in hospital.

The MEN is now appealing for anyone with information - including those linked to criminal activity - to provide the name of the two men to police.

Our plea comes after officers linked the shooting to the gangland assasination of Salford 'Mr Big' Paul Massey and four other firearms incidents caused by a feud between organised crime gangs in Salford and Swinton.

The attack was condemned by GMP's Deputy Chief Constable, Ian Hopkins, as 'sickening'.

He said: "This has to be the turning point. People can no longer remain silent about organised crime in Salford."

The two men who knocked at their door at 9.25pm on Monday were believed to be targeting Jayne's husband, Christian Hickey.

Mr Hickey, who was at home, ran after the attackers who escaped on foot. One line of inquiry is that the attack is linked to Mr Hickey's conviction for manslaughter in 2003.

He was jailed for seven years and another man, Philip Hickey Jones, sentenced to life in prison for murder.

Both men were jailed in connection with the death of Philip Marsh, who was stabbed to death in Enville Road, Duchy, Salford in September 2002. …
