Royals Roster

Article excerpt

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Royals on Tuesday announced their 25-man roster for the World Series prior to the start of Game 1 against the New York Mets, and there was one notable change.

Minor league infielder Raul Mondesi Jr. was added to the roster, while speedster Terrance Gore was left off. Royals manager Ned Yost said the move gives him needed flexibility for Citi Park in New York.

"It took a long time for me to think through this with the coaches," Yost said. "Gore is a tremendous base stealer, but he's kind of a specialist at that. Mondesi can do a lot of things. He can play the field really, really well at shortstop and second base. He's a switch-hitter, he can hit a fastball and can bunt and he can run.

"So all of these situations just kind of came into play and it gives us more flexibility for a National League game. The coaches were on the idea before I was, and we had to sit and discuss it for a long time and finally when I told Raul that he was going to be on the roster, he looked at me and said, 'I'm ready.' So that turned the page for me."

Should the 20-year old Mondesi play, he would become the first player in MLB history to make his big-league debut in the World Series. Mondesi, the team's top prospect and the son of former big leaguer Raul Mondesi, played in 81 games for Double-A Northwest Arkansas this season, hitting .243 with six home runs and 33 RBIs. He also stole 19 bases.

"I say I'm ready because I saw my dad playing all the years," Mondesi said. "So that's not something big, but I'm ready to help the team."

Mondesi, a native of the Dominican, was signed by the Royals in July of 2011 for $2 million. He played in the Futures Game during this year's All-Star break.
