Dreams of 'The Nutcracker' Danced in Their Heads

Tiny bumblebees, toy soldiers and carousel horses twirled on their tiptoes Halloween morning.

But these getups weren't for trick-or-treat.

More than 100 Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre school students tried on their costumes for the first time Saturday for their December performances of "The Nutcracker."

Costumier Janet Groom Campbell said "The Nutcracker" is an old friend of the school, but her challenge is making each costume look like it's being worn for the first time, though it has seen hundreds of shows.

Girls' slippers and tights poked out from under their costumes as they scampered to mirrors to look at their ensembles.

Eight-year-old Isabella Wright's tight curls bounced while she practiced dance steps in the school's lobby.

She'll don a colorful silk and taffeta dress with a big sash when she plays a little girl in the Kaufmann family in the party scene of the classic Christmas production with a Pittsburgh twist.

Isabella, who has been dancing for six years and practices four days a week, loves rehearsals and is excited to play hopscotch on stage during the show, she said. …
