A scan of recent articles on the health of the oceans reveals that they are threatened with ecological collapse. High among the reasons for this, alongside of overfishing, are global warming and ocean acidification, driven by man's release of CO2 into the atmosphere.

As a former diver, I understand the significance of these trends and find it most unsettling. Warming is disrupting ocean currents and causing vital coral and kelp communities across the planet to die. Coral reefs and kelp forests serve as nurseries for many species of marine life, including valuable food fish. In addition, the seas are one-third more acidic than in pre-industrial times, and this is affecting the entire marine food chain, by making it harder for organisms to create shells or even respire. …
