WHAT put Manchester on the map was the Industrial Revolution, which brought the city wealth and global importance.

However, it's important to remember that what powered that revolution was creative innovation and invention by the dynamic people here.

Most inventions and innovations are driven by one-man bands or small companies, so it's vitally important to offer these people as much support as possible. From IT to automation, they are designing and selling new products - creating value out of nothing. To me, these people are the heart of Manchester.

As chair of the Manchester Inventors Group, I have noticed that many local and government funds are driving innovation in the digital creative and the high-end automation sectors. What we also need to do is support the ordinary person who has passion for experimenting or exploring new ideas.

We need to offer guidance and mentoring to help young talent to be creative.

The opportunity to make mistakes, fail, but retain the self- confidence to move on and try again. …
