STONE Roses mania has hit Manchester - and the Waterfall effect could boost city cash registers to the tune of Pounds 34m.

The four-piece sparked a frenzy among music fans near and far when they announced a string of shows at Manchester's Etihad Stadium next year, turning the city into a music mecca.

Tickets for the gigs on June 17 and 18 went on sale for Pounds 64.90 at 9.30am yesterday.

After they were snapped up within minutes, the band added another two dates for June 15 and 19.

With a 58,000 capacity crowd expected each night, that means 232,000 people could see the group over the four gigs.

A large proportion of them are expected to pack out city centre hotels, with many already filling up six months in advance.

Room rates have already rocketed by up to Pounds 200 more than usual.

Tourism experts say the average visitor staying overnight for an event like the Stone Roses spends Pounds 146.50, including accommodation.

While not every fan will stay in a hotel, many will pay over the odds - and go shopping too.

Based on that figure, the estimated economic benefit to Manchester is nearly Pounds 34m.

And hotels are already cashing in on fans.

Popular travel website Expedia have rooms at the new Innside Hotel, next door to the HOME development off Whitworth Street West, priced at Pounds 314 for June 17 compared with Pounds 103 for the Friday before and after the shows.

Rooms rocket from Pounds 107 to Pounds 242 at the Aurora, from Pounds 71 to Pounds 299 at the Jury's Inn, Pounds 83 to Pounds 190 and Pounds 98 to Pounds 259 at the Radisson Blue Hotel, on Peter Street.

Rooms at Hotel Football, Malmaison, and several chain hotels in the city centre - including Ibis and Holiday Inn - have already sold out on the website.

Such is demand for tickets that they are now being sold on marketplace websites for more than Pounds 500.

Hundreds of fans have blasted sites such as Get Me In and StubHub for allowing people to sell them for hundreds of pounds. …
