Englewood Seeking Broader Use of Funds for At-Risk Kids

ENGLEWOOD -- The Board of Education is hoping to provide more support for schoolwide programs by applying to use Title 1 funding now dedicated to helping at-risk students.

The board on Oct. 15 approved an application to the state Department of Education to use Title I funds in a new program that would benefit all students in the district.

Every school in Englewood receives Title I funding because each one has more than 40 percent of students receiving free and reduced- cost lunches, said district Business Administrator Cheryl Balletto. The district received $400,000 in Title I funds for the 2014-15 school year.

It currently places Title I funds in targeted-assistance programs, which allow the money to be used only for children identified as failing or at risk of failing, said Balletto. The Department of Education can permit use of Title I funding schoolwide, however.

"Due to the fact we want to increase test scores, all of the students would have a chance to have the additional services that Title I can provide," Balletto said. …
