Stranded air passengers await inspectors in Egypt

International passengers leaving Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh continued to line up for flights on Sunday, as the first of three teams of Russian inspectors was dispatched to the country to examine airport security after the Oct. 31 airline disaster. The Russian flight's crash in the Sinai Peninsula that killed all 224 people aboard continues to generate fallout, after the Islamic State claimed responsibility for its downing and U.S. and British officials say intelligence shows it was likely brought down by a bomb on board. Britain and several airlines have stopped normally scheduled flights to the resort, while Russia has suspended all flights to Egypt because of security concerns.

Netanyahu heads to Washington as new aide stirs controversy * Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left for Washington on Sunday on a trip that has become clouded in controversy after his appointment of a new spokesman who has spoken derisively about President Barack Obama. Netanyahu's trip to the White House comes at a sensitive time for Israel, which is still reeling from the international community's nuclear deal with arch-enemy Iran and a wave of Palestinian violence that shows no signs of ending. But attention was focused on his appointment of Ran Baratz, a conservative commentator who has suggested in Facebook posts that Obama is anti-Semitic and that Secretary of State John Kerry cannot be taken seriously.

Dubai Airshow opens * The biennial Dubai Airshow has opened its doors, showcasing the latest and newest aircraft in the fast- growing fleet of Gulf carriers. Dubai-based Emirates displayed on Sunday its 68th brand new double decker A380 aircraft. Qatar Airways is displaying three of its aircraft, the A380, A350 and a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Unlike at the last airshow in 2013, no major purchases had been announced. …
