Payments for Military Tributes Are Shameful

Article excerpt

I read the article about our Department of Defense using our tax dollars to pay for our military men and women to participate in sporting events ("Department of Defense Paid $53 Million to Pro Sports for Military Tributes, Report Says," Nov. 6). Shame on whoever allowed this practice. Shame on the sporting world for accepting money for their participation.

All these years of watching our military participate we thought it was nice of these teams to show appreciation to all who serve our country, when really it was nothing more than a business deal.

How anyone could dare see fit to use our money this way is beyond me. Can we not show our pride in our military and country without paying for it?

We need to go back to ask not what your country can do for you, but what can you do for your country. Shame on all who participated! I would rather have put that money in the pockets of our brave men and women.

No reason to cheer

Do you hear what I hear?

I hear the Republican presidential candidates speaking to their followers promising to overturn Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act). I hear applause, applause, cheer, cheer.

I hear - For those 17 million Americans who stepped up to purchase health insurance for themselves and their families, we are going to take that away. Applause, applause, cheer, cheer.

I hear - For those of you with debilitating health problems and pre-existing health conditions, we are going to make sure you continue to have a life of problems getting the care you need. Applause, applause, cheer, cheer.

I hear - For those of you who may have to choose whether to eat or pay for your medication and those who are going into the doughnut hole every year, we are going to give you a voucher and good luck with that. Applause, applause, cheer, cheer.

I hear - For those students working hard to get through college to make their future secure, don't get sick or have an accident because we don't care if you have health insurance. Applause, applause, cheer, cheer. …
