CROSS COUNTRY: STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Adam Bradtmueller always saves the best for last. That philosophy has served him well.

But never more so than on Saturday morning when the senior from Sarasota High torched the rest of the field to capture the gold medal at the Class 4A Cross Country State Championships.

Bradtmueller became the first cross country runner in school history to win a state individual crown after touring the 5K course at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee in a time of 15:44.9, nearly six seconds quicker than senior Justin Pacifico of Flagler Palm Coast who snared second place.

The Sarasota girls team was also outstanding Saturday, finishing second in the Class 4A team standings with 116 points. Winter Park won the girls crown with 40 points.

"I just tucked in with the rest of the front pack for most of the race," Bradtmueller said. "With about 400 meters to go, I knew it was now or never.

"I just kept pushing and pushing, looking over my shoulder once in a while. When I saw no one was with me, I just went into a nice victory stride."

Bradtmueller's race strategy worked to perfection.

"Adam had a great plan and the rest of the runners fell right into his hands," Sarasota cross country coach John Stevenson said. "He has the speed of a miler and a true kick. The pack went out slow, about 4:50 the first mile. That was perfect for him. He can outkick the rest of the guys."

The Sarasota boys finished sixth overall, just six points out of fourth place, with 179. St. Thomas Aquinas finished first with a team total of 80.

"It feels great for everything to pay off for our coaches and me with a state championship," Bradtmueller said. "I knew that was going to be the last time I ever wore the Sarasota High jersey with the S and the wings. I have always taken pride in that."

Senior teammate Brady Hill finished 15th in 16:22. …
