The Post-Gazette editorial board is correct in its assertion that the Nov. 7 meeting between the leaders from the two sides of the Taiwan Strait was indeed more than just symbolic ("Historic Turn: Leaders of China and Taiwan Engage the Future," Nov. 10).

Endinga history of separation that has lasted more than six decades, the two sides have affirmed to the world their determination to safeguard cross-strait peace and promote regional stability. Stating the reaffirmation of the 1992 consensus (one China, respective interpretations) and maintaining the peaceful status quo as priorities for his meeting with Xi Jinping, President Ma Ying-jeou cited the 23 bilateral agreements concluded in the past seven years on a wide variety of areas that have created tremendous dividends and elevated relations to their most stable state in 66 years. …
