Judge Won't Stop Ferguson-Florissant School Board Election

ST. LOUIS * A federal judge here said Thursday that a pending lawsuit by the Missouri NAACP over how Ferguson-Florissant School Board members are chosen will not interfere with the April board election.

"The last thing I want to do ... is disrupt the citizens' ability to participate in the election in Ferguson-Florissant," said U.S. District Judge Rodney Sippel. He also said he was not sure if he had the authority to order a delay, which would leave two vacancies or extend the term of incumbents.

Sippel said candidate filing opens in about a month, for about a month too soon to accommodate any changes that might result from a trial currently set for January.

Cindy Ormsby, a lawyer representing the district, recommended that the election go forward. Tony Rothert of the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri, representing the NAACP, had no specific recommendation, although he suggested a possible delay of several months. …
