Catching Up with Landon Donovan

Article excerpt

Landon Donovan, perhaps the greatest men's soccer player in our nation's history, was in St. Louis on Friday. I caught up with him to talk about his stance on the national team's coach and other hot topics.

Q: Thoughts on the current U.S. national team, in town for a game Friday night?

A: I think what we're all waiting for is some consistency there's been too much inconsistency in the team, the player selection, the formations, all that stuff. And I get the sense that the players also just want some stability. Even if it's not them playing, they want to know who's playing and what the roles are. Going into qualifying, that's important.

A lot of the off-the-field things the way they travel, the places they stay, the food they eat, the information they're getting.

But some of the problems have been with inconsistencies, so many guys in and out of the team, guys who one week are a top player or captain, and the next week they're not getting called into camp. So there's all this uncertainty. And I think that's starting to weigh on the players. So when I'm outspoken about it, it's not a personal vendetta, I just care about the team and I want to see them do well. I can't just turn it off and not say I care.

Q: The average age of the United States team in the World Cup was 27.8, almost two years older than Germany. …
