Salvation Army Begins Red Kettle Campaign

The Salvation Army rang in the holiday season with the kickoff of its Red Kettle Campaign on Tuesday evening.

Starting Wednesday, bell ringers will greet customers and take donations at a variety of sites across the city. The campaign will run through Christmas Eve.

The organization's goal is to raise $185,000 through the campaign.

Money raised goes toward a food pantry, a Monday through Friday community meal program, a transitional housing program for veterans and a general emergency fund.

It also supports the Angel Tree Program, which provides food boxes and toys for registered families. "(The money) all stays local," said director of development Shelley Robertson. "That's huge."

Maj. Brian Burkett, director of the Salvation Army in Topeka, flipped the switch on a Christmas tree decoration at the 580 WIBW radio station, signaling the campaign's kickoff. …
