Pope's message was for us all

I'm responding to an interesting letter in the Readers' Forum from Oct. 16. The author, H. John Rogers, referred to a story from the Gospel of Matthew about the temptations Jesus faced as he began his earthly ministry. Mr. Rogers seems to imply that Pope Francis yielded to a satanic temptation, seeking his own glory when he visited the United States. He spoke of the "untold millions of private and public funds which were expended on this tour, etc.

Mr. Rogers labeled the pope's visit a "rock tour and expressed the idea that all that money could have been more properly spent on "prison reform, enlightened drug and alcohol treatment, etc.

I read an article that made a powerful point about how many homes could be provided for the homeless for the price of one bomber plane, about how many starving families could be fed with healthy food for years for the price of one battleship. …
