WASHINGTON * It was the toughest walk of the day for Sen. Roy Blunt.

Blunt, R-Mo., who receives top-secret briefings on terrorist threats on a regular basis, was headed to a secure, sound-protected room in the Hart Senate Office Building. Down a tunnel underneath the Capitol, around phalanxes of congressional aides and members of Congress going back and forth, he knew he was walking toward the grimmest hour of the day.

"I just wish I didn't know what I know," he said.

And what he knows he cannot talk about.

Blunt is one of 13 members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. President Barack Obama had declared last week the Islamic State threat (the administration calls it ISIL) "contained" before its trainees killed 129 people in Paris on Friday. In a stunning rebuke of a president of her own party, the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, Dianne Feinstein of California, told MSNBC that "ISIS is not contained. ISIL is expanding. …
