LAKEWOOD RANCH

LAKEWOOD RANCH -- For the second time this year, the Legacy Golf Club has changed hands.

A local company headed by Jon Whittemore, who owns two other courses in the area, paid $3.4 million for the public golf club that features an 18-hole championship course designed by legendary player Arnold Palmer.

Legacy was sold by ClubCorp, an owner of 200 golf and country clubs, which bought the Lakewood Ranch property in April as part of a six-course, $44 million deal.

The 200-acre Legacy, opened in March 1997, also includes practice facilities and a 5,400-square-foot clubhouse.

Legacy was built by Lakewood Ranch master developer Schroeder- Manatee Ranch to attract home buyers to the then-fledgling community.

It has since had several owners, with recent sales at steep discounts after golf course values declined. …
