Colonial baseball star

North Allegheny grad Mike Butia, a junior right fielder at James Madison University, was the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Co-Player of the Week for the third week of February. In a three- game series against Bucknell, Butia hit .600 (9 for 15) with two doubles, two triples, a homer, six runs and eight RBIs.

Butia continued his hot play this past week. On Sunday, in a 12- 3 win over Fordham, Butia hit two home runs and went 4 for 4 with five RBIS. For the season, Butia leads JMU (7-3) in batting average (.450, 18 for 40), triples (3), home runs (4), RBIs (18) and total bases (39).

College softball star

Hampton High grad Kelly Quigley, a junior first baseman on the Division I University of Akron women's softball team, was the Mid- American Conference East Division Player of the Week for the third week of February.

In five games that week, Quigley hit .529 (9 for 17) with two doubles, a triple, a home run and six RBIs. Akron is 7-3.

College baseball

North Allegheny High grad Andrew Dobies, a junior pitcher on the Division I University of Virginia baseball team, was 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA heading into yesterday's play. He had 19 strikeouts in 18 innings. After 10 games, the Cavaliers were 9-1.

Butler grad Clint Eury, a junior first baseman at Penn State, is hitting .353 (6 for 17). The Nittany Lions are 3-1.

Pine-Richland grad Ryan Jones, a senior outfielder at Division I East Carolina University, leads the Pirates (12-0) in batting average .424 (14 for 33), doubles (5) and on-base percentage (.537).

Shady Side Academy grad Justin Gordon, a sophomore second baseman at Division III Emory University, is hitting .229 (8 for 39) and leads the team in runs with 14. Emory is 10-0.

North Allegheny grad Mike Wert, a senior pitcher at Division III Washington and Lee University, is 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA. In 17 innings, he's struck out 13 and walked six. The Generals are 6-2.
