Health Care and Construction Boost St. Louis Job Gains

An apparent surge in health care and construction hiring helped the St. Louis area post a gain of 5,100 jobs in October.

The gain, according to new seasonally adjusted figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, follows September's loss of 2,900 jobs in what has been an up-and-down year for the metro St. Louis job market.

The area now has 13,500 more people working than in October 2014. It remains 25,400 jobs below the employment peak of January 2008, just as the nation was falling into recession.

The health care and social assistance sector showed the biggest employment gain between October 2014 and October 2015, adding 7,500 jobs. That's double the year-over-year gain of 3,600 jobs it showed in September. (Figures for specific sectors are not seasonally adjusted.)

Construction and mining employment also jumped. …
